The brawl broke out just before 11:30 a.m., Abington police said. Video of the fight circulating on social media appears to show a large group of students in a hallway being separated by school security and police officers.

"The situation was brought under control as a result of the swift and coordinated response of an Abington Police School Resource Officer, school personnel, and the school’s security team," township police said.

"Together, they managed to restore order and bring the altercation to an end."

The eight are charged with rioting and simple assault, and the ongoing investigation may lead to charges against additional students, they added.

There were no serious injuries to students, staff, or police, the department said.

"Earlier today, an altercation between several students took place in one of our cafeterias (...) and immediate action was taken to intercede," said ASHS Principal Angelo Berrios in a statement

"Our school is committed to maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for all students."
